Should We Try To Repair Our Own Computer?

December 23rd, 2010 0 Comments

I ask myself this question every time my computer doesn’t work. Don’t imagine I am thinking the same about the washing machine or the TV set. For some strange reason, the computer seems to be more familiar. It doesn’t wash my clothes, it doesn’t give me food or oxygen, yet it is the most important appliance. Even appliance is not an accurate term: necessity will be more appropriate. And judging by the multitude of tasks, I can even call it my assistant. Isn’t it also your case?

So you understand my despair every single time this precious friend is in trouble. How can we look to such suffering and wait until some heartless technician will come to repair the computer? How can he know better than us what ‘our baby’ wants?

If you will consult a psychiatrist he will for sure tell you that our addiction is not healthy. On the other hand a technician will tell you also that our addiction is also not healthy for the computer and that we shouldn’t try to repair our own computer, more than we should try to do brain surgery. In my defense, I can argue that I have technical skills due to my technical formation during university, but this usually is not a very convincing argument and also a very particular one.

So finally admitting defeat I am forced to accept the fact that IT trained specialists play their role in reliving us from unnecessary daily burdens. They don’t get electrocuted, don’t push the computer to open destroying its cover and don’t mess with its operational system and its commands. They communicate easily with the computer, run a smooth diagnose program that will tell them the real problem in a very short time, enabling them to fix it and leave me back to your old addictive-assistant routine.

On the other hand, every time I try repairing my computer, in the best case scenario I end up buying at least one spare that didn’t need replacement without obtaining a functional computer. In the worst case scenario, I end up by loosing all the information contained within. Both scenarios end up with a call to the computer technician. So I spend a double amount of effort and money to obtain the same result. I might as well start doing brain surgery, don’t you think?
