The technologies that have developed to carry out CD and DVD Duplication are now quite varied and complex, due to an increasing range of requirements by users and improvements in quality.
There are now several format types of optical discs that can be used for CD or DVD Duplication depending on what the disk is to be used for. Each of these works on the basis of varying the reflectivity of the recorded surface, although new technologies working with other methods are currently being developed. The most commonly used type of optical disk currently used for CD Duplication uses an organic dye that is scorched by a laser to change its reflective properties. These types of optical discs are written to as a whole and can only be used once. Re-writable optical disks use what are known as phase change alloys. These have a surface which is converted between amorphous and crystalline states, which have different reflective properties, again by a laser. Though this type of disk offers greater flexibility to the user for CD and DVD duplication, the contrast between the varying reflectivity is not as great as for the dye surface disks, and therefore different drives are required to read the different disks, although most modern drives support both types.
During the CD Duplication process, a number of functions are required to be checked before the Duplication is carried out. The correct power of the laser required for the writing session needs to be calibrated, which is done by the Optimal Power Calibration (OPC) function. The recording mode also needs to be set. An optical disk can be recorded during the Duplication process in four ways: Track at once, which is generally used for audio CDs as the tracks are written individually with gaps in between. Disc at once, which writes the whole disk in one go. Session at once, which writes and finalises several sessions on one CD, and packet writing, which writes only to part of the disk as desired.
The connectivity of the CD or DVD Duplication recording device must be compatible, and as a result most use standard connectivity options. The most commonly used currently are the Parallel ATA connections for internal drives, while external drives connect a PATA drive mechanism to bridges inside the case. More commonly, DVD recorders are using Serial ATA connections which can be used in very high speed drives. Stand alone drives tend to use AV connections as standard.
